What is Student LPI and what is Student LPI Online?
For a complete description, see About Student LPI.

What is 360-degree leadership assessment?
Refers to a type of leadership training that involves feedback from several people (this can include peers, instructors, employers, etc.) who have observed or worked with the Leader being assessed. For more information, see About Student LPI.

Can the Student LPI be re-administered so that progress can be measured?
Yes. You are encouraged to do so. However, you can't take the inventory again under the same Leader License. To purchase more Leader Licenses, see Buy Student LPI.

What are an Administrator, Leader, and Observer?
  • Administrator. Sometimes referred to as a Facilitator in the print version of Student LPI, the Administrator purchases Student LPI Online Leader Licenses, sets up Leader profiles, administers inventories, and runs reports of the results.
  • Leader - This is the person whose leadership behavior is being assessed. The Leader will be doing a self-assessment, as well as asking others (Observers) to assess his or her leadership behaviors.
  • Observer - Selected by the Leader, these individuals provide feedback on the Leader's leadership behaviors.

What kind of Observers should Leaders choose?
It's important that the Observers actually have experience working with you or observing you in a leadership role. The more diverse the population of Observers, the more informative is their feedback. Recruit peers in organizations, classmates, co-workers, instructors, employers, or even family members and friends.

How many Observers should Leaders select?
To get the most benefit out of Student LPI Online, the authors recommend gathering feedback from three or more Observers.

Will the Leader be able to identify my responses?
The Student LPI Online system was designed to help preserve the anonymity of Observers.

With this arrangement, if a category has only one Observer, that Observer's feedback could be easily recognized. To help prevent this, the LPI Online system takes the feedback from a category with a single Observer and pools it with the feedback in the "Other" category. The only exception to this is with the "Manager" category. A single Observer in "Manager" category will not be pooled. If you are a manager concerned about anonymity, please contact your LPI Online Administrator.

Purchasing on Student LPI Online

What can I purchase on Student LPI Online?
You will be purchasing Leader Licenses. Student LPI Online charges for each instance of a Leader addition or renewal for the Leader survey. It deducts per instance for the Leader survey, not per person, so renewing a Leader for a new administration of the inventory will decrement one token. The Leader's Observers, however, participate at no additional cost.

What is a Leader License?
A Leader License provides an individual you specify (a Leader) with access to specific portions of Student LPI Online. The Leader will use that access to take his or her leadership assessment inventory (the Student LPI-Self). The Leader will also use the site to communicate with and manage Observers the Leader selects to fill out their own surveys (the Student LPI-Observer).

What information do I need before I purchase Student LPI Online?
You will need to think about how many Student LPI Online Leaders you will be buying for over the next 12 months. It is important to remember that the prices and discounts are based on a 12-month license. If you do not use the licenses you purchased within 12 months, they will expire. Beyond that, you will also need:
  • Your basic contact information.
  • A valid email address.
  • Your credit card number if you would like to access the site immediately. Student LPI Online accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
  • Once that information is entered and your credit card is validated, you will receive an email providing instructions for logging onto LPI Online.
  • We recommend that you check system requirements before finalizing any purchase.

Do you accept purchase orders?
We do accept purchase orders. However a Student LPI sales representative must be on hand to guide you through the approval process. Because of this, there may be a waiting period before you will have access to Student LPI Online. You can gain immediate access if you use a credit card as payment.

Troubleshooting Student LPI Online

What should I do if my username and password is not working?
  • Check your email address. It should contain an @ symbol and no spaces.
  • Passwords are case sensitive. Make sure you are entering it correctly. Double-check the spelling of your password. Commonly confused characters are: one (1) with the lowercase letter L (l) or uppercase I (I) and zero (0) with the uppercase letter O (O).
  • Select the correct user type: Administrator or Leader. If you purchased licenses, you will be logging in as an Administrator. If you are taking the Student LPI-Self and will be assigning Observers to assess your leadership skills, you are a Leader. If you're not certain, contact your Administrator.

Should I login as administrator or as a leader?
At login, users are asked to select a radio button indicating whether they are an Administrator or a Leader. If you purchased licenses, you will be logging in as an Administrator. If you are taking the Student LPI-Self and will be assigning Observers to assess your leadership skills, you are a Leader. If you're not certain, contact your Administrator.

Administrator

What should I do if one or all of my Leaders didn't receive a username and password?
Confirm that the correct email address was used. In some cases spam/spoof filters may prevent some email from being received by recipients.
If the user does not remember his or her username, tell them to use the Forgot Password Link.
  • Go the Student LPI Home page
  • Click on Forgot Password Link
  • Select Leader radio button
  • Type in Leader's email address
  • The Leader will receive an email with his or her password.

You can also resend your Leaders their notification from the Manage Active Leaders page. By selecting the checkbox in the Remind column, a reminder email will be sent to them. It will contain their username and password.

Who will run the Student LPI report when Leaders and Observers have completed their surveys?
Administrators are the only individuals who can run reports. Leaders cannot run their own reports.

When can I run reports?
The Leader must complete his or her survey before a report can be run. It is recommended that reports contain the feedback from a minimum of three Observers.

Why does generating a report take so long or time out?
When generating a report, the system is calculating and displaying the most recent information on the fly. So, the more data it has to go through, the longer it will take. Sometimes the delay can be long enough to invoke your browser's time out limit.
You will most likely start to see a significant slow down when Leaders have more than 25 Observers (for the Individual Feedback Report) or with Groups of 25 or more Leaders (for the Combined Summary report). We recommend you try to keep the total number of reportees below 25 on any generated report.

Leaders

What do I do if I enter my Observer's email address incorrectly?
Since Observers cannot be deleted once they have been added, you will need to add the Observer a second time, this time with the correct email address. Since the first email address entered was incorrect, the Observer will not receive the first notification.

What do I do if my Leader has deleted his or her notification email to take the Student LPI or forgotten to take the survey? You can remind your Leaders to take their survey from the Manage Leaders page. By selecting the checkbox in the Remind column, a reminder email will be sent to them. It will contain their username and password.

Observers

What should I do if an Observer has deleted the Leader's email message containing the URL to access the site?
Obtain the email address of the Leader the Observer was asked to assess and the Observer's email address. Send this information to studentlpi@wiley.com requesting that a new link be built. An email with the rebuilt link will be sent directly to the Observer.

You can also resend the Observer their link by selecting the Email Observers button on the Manage Observers page. By clicking on this link you can send a reminder email to the Observers that have not completed their Student LPI. A link to their survey will be included in the body of the message.

What should I do if the wrong Leader name is showing up on my screen?
This is usually caused by incorrect session information, usually from caching through your browser.
If you are sharing a computer with several people who are also taking the Observer survey, you need to close down all browser windows on the computer and restart your survey from a newly launched browser window.
If you are completing several surveys for different Leaders, you also need to make sure you completely shut down all browser windows, including the browser window from the previous survey. Good rule of thumb: if you start a new survey, start fresh with a single browser window open.
If you have closed down all windows and are still seeing the wrong name on your screen it could mean that the server your computer is on caches pages on the "server side." Check with your network administrator to see if this is the possible cause.

Why am I unable to access my Observer survey with my Hotmail account?
Because of some code Hotmail adds to your browser's session, Student LPI Online Observer links may be compromised. Copying and pasting the URL from your email directly into the browser's URL window, and not clicking directly on the link, should fix this.

Why is my Observer link not working when I click on it directly from the email?
Check the URL in your notification email. Some email programs (Microsoft Outlook, for example) insert spaces and line breaks in the display of the link that may truncate the URL when clicked on. To repair the link, copy the link from your email to notepad. Delete extra spaces or line breaks, then copy and paste the repaired link into your browser window.

Why am I being locked out?
If a Leader is renewed and there are outstanding surveys from Observers in the first round, the Observers from the first round will be locked out until they are added as Observers to the Leader's renewed administration.
