Student LPI Online uses a number of common terms in ways that may seem unfamiliar at first. Below is a glossary terms that you will find while using LPI Online.

Account - Your account enables you to use and administer Student LPI Online. It contains information about you and your organization, including how many Leader Licenses you have. You may update your account at any time by logging on to Student LPI Online and clicking My Account.

Active Leader - In managing your Leaders, you have the choice of having them Active or Archived. Active Leaders appear on your Active Leader summary table. How you use these designations is your decision, but typically these Leaders have begun but not finished the Student LPI process. See also Archived Leader.

Administrator - Sometimes referred to as a Facilitator in the print version of classic LPI and the Student LPI, the Administrator purchases Student LPI Online Leader Licenses, sets up Leader profiles, administers the Student LPI survey, and runs reports of the results.

Anonymity - The Student LPI Online system takes every precaution to maintain the anonymity of Observers. The Observer's name will not be associated with responses.

Archived Leader - In managing their Leaders, Administrators have the choice of categorizing them as Active or Archived. Archived Leaders appear on an Archived Leader summary table. Administrators typically use this classification to remove the Leader from their Active Leader table, yet preserve the Leader's profile information for future use.

Facilitator's Guide - Provides instructions for running a Student LPI feedback workshop for one or more Leaders. The workshop is designed to help Leaders interpret their Student LPI Feedback Reports. In addition to explaining Kouzes and Posner's Exemplary Leadership model, The Facilitator's Guide offers advice and techniques for presenting feedback to your Leaders. The guide can be easily printed from PDF format or viewed on-screen.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership - Created by Kouzes and Posner, this model summarizes behaviors important to leadership:

Instrument - Refers to the entire Student LPI process, including taking the inventories, interpreting the Feedback Report, and formulating a leadership development plan.

Inventory - The Student LPI actually consists of two inventories, one for the Leader's self-assessment (Student LPI-Self) and the other for the Observers assessing the Leader (Student LPI-Observer). Each is composed of 30 questions-six for each of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.

Kouzes and Posner - James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner are the creators of the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and the Student LPI. Their research in leadership brings together data from more than 4,000 cases as well as 200,000 surveys. Kouzes, James M. - See Kouzes and Posner.

Leader - The person being assessed through Student LPI Online. A given Leader will self-assess, as well as be assessed by Observers.

Licenses - Student LPI Online charges every organization or consultant a fee for each Leader being assessed. A single Leader License enables an Administrator, a Leader, and any number of Observers to use Student LPI Online. For more information on purchasing Leader Licenses, click Buy Student LPI.

Leadership Challenge, The - The best selling book by James M. Kouzes and Barry Posner, creators of the LPI and Student LPI. For more information about the concept and the book, visit the Leadership Challenge Website.

Likert Scale - A scale usually employed to quantify varying degrees of agreement or disagreement with a given statement. In Student LPI Online's case, the Likert scale measures the frequency with which a Leader uses each of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, from 1 ("rarely or seldom") to 5 ("almost always").

LPI - Short for Leadership Practices Inventory by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge. The print version of the classic LPI is now in its tenth printing.

Observer - Selected by the Leader, these individuals provide feedback on the Leader's leadership behaviors by taking the Student LPI Observer.

Student Workbook - Designed for Leaders participating in a Student LPI feedback workshop or reviewing their scores on their own, this workbook contains instructions for analyzing a Leader's Student LPI Feedback Report. Leaders can bring a printout of this workbook to their feedback meeting or workshop. Analysis of a Leader's Feedback Report is placed in context with the leadership model created by Kouzes and Posner.

Posner, Barry Z. - See Kouzes and Posner.

Questionnaire - Term often used when referring to the inventory, Student LPI-Self, or Report - See Student LPI Feedback Report.

Student LPI Feedback Report - Scores inventory data and incorporates the results into a single feedback document.

Student LPI Observer - The Student LPI inventory taken by a Leader's Observers (people who work closely with the Leader), which provides the Leader with feedback on how others view his or her leadership practices.

Student LPI Online - Name of the Website created as a tool for administering Student LPI.

Student LPI Process - Refers to the entire process involved in generating and receiving a Leader's feedback, from taking the Student LPI-Self to interpreting the Student LPI Feedback Report in a Student LPI workshop.

Student LPI-Self - The Student LPI inventory taken by the Leader for self-assessment.

Student LPI Workshop - A meeting or workshop with one or more Leaders where each Leader's LPI Feedback Report is interpreted and strategies for growth are outlined.

Survey - Term occasionally used in referring to Student LPI-Self or Student LPIObserver. More commonly refers to the demographic survey Leaders are encouraged to take after completing their Student LPI-Self.
